Let me start by telling you how much I adore Kaye's writing style. She is beautifully descriptive. The words flow almost poetically. Yet, not overly so. There is an understated elegance to her writing and I enjoyed it very much. She writes in a way that I would expect from an adult fantasy novel and it's refreshing to know there are authors that believe the young adult genre can be poetic too.I did have my problems with the book. At the start we are introduced to so many characters, so quickly, that I found myself almost lost. I am a character driven reader. I need to connect fairly quickly with the main characters to keep my interest up. I struggled with that because it jumps around to a handful of different people. After several chapters I began to get a feel for everyone. However, the pace of the book was still fairly slow. It didn't pick up until about seventy-five percent of the way through and the next thing you know, it's over. While the story is fine in itself, it is just not very action packed. What I did love, aside from the writing, was the world building. The human and fairy worlds exist together but only those with a fair bit of magic can see both worlds. All the supernatural creatures were interesting and some fairly creative. I like that it takes place in a human city and not a alternate fairy universe. It gives it a bit more realism. Though I had some issues, it was still a solid enough read that I am glad I had the opportunity to review. I will be keeping my eye on Kaye's career, as I am definitely a fan of her style. *A copy of this title was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review*
